Learner Agency

At Edwardstown Primary, learner agency is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that when students are empowered to take charge of their learning, their confidence, creativity, and critical thinking soars. Our approach encourages every child to have a voice, make choices, and actively participate in shaping their own educational journey.

ORACY

Oracy is the ability to express ideas clearly and listen effectively. This is a key focus in developing learner agency at Edwardstown. Through rich classroom discussions, presentations, and collaboration, students build strong communication skills that prepare them to lead and contribute meaningfully within and beyond our school.

Examples of learner agency initiatives across Reception to Year 6 that promote Oracy:

Reception – Year 2: Play based investigations.
Students are agents of their own exploration, being able to choose from a range of different learning spaces to explore. Play based investigations build confidence, self-regulation, and responsibility, as students plan and reflect on their investigations, making learning meaningful and personalised.

Year 3: Inquiry
Students begin inquiry projects that centre around asking open-ended, meaningful questions. They learn how to generate, refine, and explore their own questions, developing curiosity and critical thinking. This builds the foundation for deeper inquiry as our students move into middle primary.

Year 4: Passion Project
Passion Project is an inquiry-based learning initiative that asks, “Who or what has changed or shaped the world for better or worse?” Students showcase their learning through both verbal and physical presentations, helping prepare them for Discovery Time.

Year 5: Discovery Time
Discovery Time is a year 5 movement that allows students to also explore their own passion. They continue to build on their inquiry skills and learner dispositions. Discovery Time looks closely at the “Ologies”, the study of something. Students present their learning at an annual expo to our whole school and wider community.

Year 6: Business Expo
The Year 6 Business Expo is a student-led enterprise project where our Year 6 students design and run their own small businesses as part of our annual Eddie’s Market. They develop ideas, create products, manage budgets and promote their stalls to the school community. The expo provides an authentic learning experience that builds creativity, collaboration, and financial literacy.
